'Sposies, CDing, Inserts, etc.

I've been thinking about embarking on cloth diapering for awhile. I've had two or three kind people explain the many, many different options. Options for material:

  • Natural fibers

  • Organic cotton

  • Hemp

  • Bamboo

  • Synthetic Fibers

Then there are the styles:

  • AIO (All in one) - easy because the inserts don't need to be separated from the cover.

  • Hybrids - Disposable, biodegradable inserts with a cloth cover.

  • Pockets - Stay-dry material - good for overnight usage.

  • Prefolds / Fitteds. Prefolds are the most economical. Takes longer to get used to and training curve is high for caretakers. Needs a waterproof cover. Wool "longies" are a suggested cover for overnight.

  • AI2 - Same as AIOs but the inserts can be separated for easier washing and drying. Some companies call them prefolds, while others call them hybrids.

Don't forget the accessories:

  • Diaper spayer to attach to your toilet, which makes cleaning easier. They're apparently easy to install.

  • 12 - 24 cloth wipes.

  • Diaper wash / spray solution

  • Wet bag / Diaper pail liner

  • Cloth Diaper-Safe diaper cream

  • Nighttime diapering considerations (two options): Change baby more frequently at night, or stuff with additional inserts. OR go with a Special Configuration (e.g. hemp fitted diaper with a stay-dry inner liner stuffed with a hemp and microfiber insert and wrap cover).

There are also choices to be made in regards to size (one size or multiple sizes?) and tabs (velcro or nsnaps? Velcro doesn't last very long, but is easier on a squirmy baby. Snaps last longer and stand up to dryer heat.

Lastly, the HE washing machines need experimentation in terms of washing cloth diapers. Washing cloth diapers requires extra water, which goes against the whole point of HE washing machines. Apparently, some experimentation is needed to determine which settings on your machine work the best.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Obviously the options are overwhelming. I found myself literally paralyzed by the choices. One day, while shopping at Whole Foods, I saw hybrids (gDiapers) for sale. I grabbed a two-pack and the disposable, biodegradable inserts, and figured I could start with those. As much as I would like to use all cloth, I'm finding it difficult to picture myself taking the time to spray the poop off of a cloth diaper while Jack is screaming for me in the other room (beginning stages of seaparation anxiety). The fact that the hybrid allows for a quick change, while also being better in terms of waste amount and type, is perfect for now.
